One hundred and fifty years after the Sandy Lake Tragedy, the descendants of the 1850 annuity bands gathered to dedicate a memorial to those who suffered and died.  Perched on a glacial mound overlooking Sandy Lake, the Mikwendaagoziwag Memorial is situated near the resting places of the Ojibwe of 1850.

This group - Protect our Manoomin strongly opposes the current bills that affect the natural wild rice stands and ecosystem in northern Minnesota.  The legislation bills are unscientific and culturally and ecologically irresponsible.  Therefore, we are resolved as a group of Anishinabeg, non-Anishinabeg, to resist any changes that will endanger our manoomin.  We will protect our manoomin for the present generations to the Seventh Generation.....and beyond.
